  • BPAP-O2P CEO Briefing: Philippine IT-BPO in the Year of the Dragon Mar 15, 2012

BPAP-O2P CEO Briefing: Philippine IT-BPO in the Year of the Dragon

What does the Year of the Dragon hold for the Philippine IT-BPO & GIC industry? 2012 is a critical year for the industry. Demand for non-voice, complex services is expected to gather increased momentum, while voice services continue to grow. While substantial gains were achieved in 2011 in improving talent supply, strategically much work remains to be done on many levels: industry brand visibility, educational infrastructure, and generating funding for programs to address these potential hurdles to growth.

How will the industry address these issues? What support from government can be expected? Is the academe reconfiguring curricula to provide graduates with the skills the industry requires? Are investors aware that the Philippines is also a key provider of non-voice, complex services?

  • BPAP-O2P CEO Briefing: Best in Class Dec 06, 2011

BPAP-O2P CEO Briefing: Best in Class

Talent management, process management, and effective stakeholder collaboration are key drivers of operational excellence, both at the company and industry level. How does an organization go from “average” to “best-in-class”? How does the IT-BPO industry develop its capacity for providing high-value, complex services?

The answer is by adopting best practice, innovating, and investing in training and education. Third-party quality certification credibly demonstrates best practice. But with approximately 20 frameworks and standards currently in place, firms are inevitably confused. Which standards really matter? What’s the best way to implement quality processes and achieve certification? This is the classic struggle to achieve quality and process excellence.

  • Thailand & the Philippines: A dismaying study in contrasts

    Feb 09, 2012

In 1985, per capita gross domestic product (GDP) for Thailand and the Philippines was just under US$1,000. Growth in Thailand was set to take off, and it did, primarily fueled by foreign direct investment (FDI) in manufacturing. Growth in the Philippines, in contrast, was set to stagnate, with the economy limping along thanks to heavy reliance on the export of people, who send home billions of dollars annually. Read More ››

  • Sustainable development requires productive populations

    Feb 02, 2012

I spent much of last week in Puerto Princesa, which with a population of about 210,000, is the Philippines most sparsely populated of 38 independent cities not controlled by the province—Palawan in this case—where they are located. Politics explains the independent classification. Puerto Princesa residents don’t vote for the governor to ensure that the interests of rural residents are fairly represented, and not overshadowed by those of the urban community. Read More ››

Something unusual is happening. The Philippines—beleaguered recipient of decades of scorn for trailing its Asian competitors economically—is suddenly the darling of a bevy of enthusiastic analysts. “Philippines emerges from economic shade,” a headline thundered on the Asia Times website. “Is the Philippines emerging as an investor safe haven against economic weakness in the West and potential turbulence in China?” journalist Joel D. Adriano asked. Read More ››
