Global Steel hot strip mill goes into commercial production

To supply domestic and foreign demand for hot rolled coils

(Manila, Philippines) - Global Steel Philippines, Inc. (GSPI) today announced the commercial operation of its hot strip mill with production capacity of 1.2 million tons of hot rolled coils (HRC) per annum.

The hot strip mill last operated in November 1999, when the company operated as National Steel Corporation (NSC). The mill underwent full rehabilitation under GSPI management May last year.

“We now have the capacity to supply regional demand for HRC, in addition to supplying the local market. The Philippines will no longer have to rely on HRC imports. Instead, it is an HRC producer for both domestic and export markets,” said Global Steel chief operating officer B.S. Mohnani.

Estimated imports of HRC into the Philippines is between 200 to 300 million tons per annum. Exports are expected to decline significantly when Global Steel attains full HRC production, reducing the need to import HRC.

In addition to hot rolled coils, the plant also produces cold rolled coils and has emerged as the country’s largest exporter of flat products. The company also has capacity to manufacture tin plates.

“Hot rolled coils are used to produce cold rolled coils and by producing our own HRC, we are better positioned to meet the stringent quality norms of our discerning customers in Asia, Europe and the USA,” Mohnani said.

“Global Steel is helping shape the future of steel in Philippines. Our long-term focus is investing in technology and world-class operations,” said Global Steel executive director, Hari Mohan Prasad Singh. “Global Steel is committed to providing the best technology, products and people to maximize value for all its stakeholders,” Singh said. Over 1,200 Filipinos currently work in the company’s Iligan steel plant.
