Global Steel Philippines receives shipments of imported steel slabs
Aug 22, 2006
(Manila, Philippines) — Global Steel Philippines, Inc. today announced the arrival of shipments of imported steel slabs from China, India and Russia. The slabs are used as raw material for the production of Hot Roiled Coils (HRC).
A ship recently arrived in Iligan carrying 20,000 MT of steel slabs from Russia. A total of 46,800 MT steel slabs were also delivered by two ships from China while another 19,660 MT came from India.
Company executives said this is the first time that three ships in quick succession have unloaded slabs at the Iligan pier since the former National Steel Corporation reopened as Global Steel. “We are expecting another 70,000 MT from various sources, including Russia and India, which will reach us in a few weeks,” said B.S. Mohnani, president for operations.
“HRC are produced from these slabs according to international standards, and are perfectly suited for thinner gauge cold rolling,” Mohnani said. The steel manufacturer has produced 186,000 MT of HRC in its Hot Strip Mill.
Global Steel also reported that it has signed a long-term agreement with a supplier from China and is in advance discussions for another long-term agreement with a large Russian supplier of slabs.
