How Diversity Gender Inclusivity Makes a Company A Great Place to Work In

By Beverly Aguilar, Senior Human Resources Officer

I have been working for TeamAsia, a women-owned and women-led company, for eight years and counting. It has opened my eyes to so many things, among them is on how to be gender inclusive in the workplace.

Since I got employed as the head of the Human Resources department, we have always been keen to look at the qualifications and experience of each applicant. We seek to not discriminate nor choose anyone as long as they have the necessary skills and requirements needed for the position.

Our company is headed by strong and empowered women, namely Monette Iturralde-Hamlin and her daughter, Bea Lim.Because of this, Gender Inclusivity and Diversity have always been heavily ingrained in the company’s DNA. TeamAsia does not look at gender or sexual orientation, but rather accepts anyone who has the heart and passion for storytelling. In doing so, the company was able to achieve many milestones because of our diverse employees who have contributed creative ideas and strategies for the success of our clients.

TEAMASIA EQUAL OPPORTUNITY POLICY

Our people is our company’s greatest asset. To take care of them, we have implemented policies based on The United Nations Women’s Empowerment Principles (UN WEPs). UN WEPs is an organization that has executed principles offering guidance to businesses on how to promote gender equality and women empowerment in the workplace, marketplace, and community.

We believe that equal employment opportunity is the pillar of a healthy and productive workplace. This is why we have made the commitment to make our employees feel supported and valued at all times.

Part of this commitment is the prohibition of discrimination and harassment of any type. We ensure gender inclusivity in our employment strategies and provide equal opportunities to all team members and applicants without any bias towards race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status or any other characteristic protected by law.

TEAMASIA OVERALL WELLNESS PROGRAM

Moreover, we have programs that promote physical, mental and overall wellness, recognizing that work-life balance is very important for every individual in our organization. Our company has monthly engagement activities like the Pop-Up where we encourage our associates to stop working for an hour or two and gather together via Zoom call to play games or just get to know each other. This helps us sustain a work environment and culture that promotes a healthy balance between the demands of work and the enjoyment of life outside of work.

Apart from engagement activities, we also encourage our employees to use their leave benefits for mental health breaks or vacations. We also have a partner clinic that is available at all times to support our employees who are experiencing mental health issues.

ZERO VIOLENCE POLICY

TeamAsia is a workplace free from threats and acts of violence. We are committed to providing a safe workplace for employees and everyone with whom we come into contact in our work, deserves to be treated with courtesy and respect.

We do not tolerate any type of workplace violence committed by or against employees. Employees are prohibited from making threats or engaging in violent activities.

As an HR head, I make sure that everyone is heard and feels safe at work so they can thrive within the organization.

Working in TeamAsia for this long made me realize that as you build efforts towards gender inclusivity, every single person at your company benefits. Happy, cared for people who feel respected and valued do their best work, and this attracts and retains the best talent. It takes transparency, and a continued willingness to evolve.
